I don't remember the first time I filed an income tax return or how I learned to do my taxes.
I have childhood memories of my dad working away at his desk so he and my mom could file theirs. I'm fairly certain I learned all I needed to from him (including never to file before the absolute deadline, but that's another story), which I suppose is why doing mine the first time was easy enough that I just don't remember it.
Every spring I hear from a young person who has questions about taxes: can I come to the office so you can help me do mine? what forms do I need to fill out? how do I pay what I owe (which no one told me I would so I didn't put any money aside to cover)?
While none of us looks forward to doing taxes, knowing how to do them is one more thing we learn from our parents. And one of the things teens in foster care are somehow supposed to learn on their own.
Teaching someone to file a tax return is surely low on the list of reasons any of us decide to become parents but an adult making time to teach this (or the many other things we need to know as adults) is not something a teen in care takes for granted.
Won't you help us ensure more teens have caring adults in their lives by getting involved, joining us for our upcoming fundraiser (see below), or donating in support of our work?
Thank you,
Susan

Chain Reaction: From Russia with Love

A performance art (live painting, original music performed live, costumes, improvised theatrics, and special effects lighting) fundraiser for DCFYI.
Monday May 5, Iota Club & Café, 6 to 10 PM.
Tickets available here.
International Performance Artist Christine Walters, known for "painting the abstract of live DJ music," will paint the story of Tati, incorporating the live rock opera performance of The Nick Miller Project Ft. Gabe Green. The pair will include costume, improvised theatrics, film, photography and special lighting.
What is Tati's story, what does it have to do with DCFYI, how did Tati meet her host family, and why does she feel so strongly about paying that family back by paying it forward? You can read Tati's story here and watch (and hear) it unfold on canvas at Chain Reaction.
Please join us (buy tickets here) and bring a friend.
Come early: Iota has happy hour specials from 6 to 7.
Christine will start painting at 7.
